For the last several years, we’ve had the great pleasure of being selected as one of the breweries that evaluates hops for the Hop Breeding Company. The Hop Breeding Company is “a joint venture between John I Haas and Select Botanicals Group” whose mission is “to develop pest-resistant and disease-resistant hop varieties with strong commercial qualities (aka they’re looking for the next big thing). The Hop Breeding Company is already responsible for developing some of the big hitters like Mosaic, Ekuanot, Loral and Citra.
Now this is where the fun part (for us) comes in… Each year, Hop Breeding Company sends us several of the hop varieties they’ve been working on to get our feedback!
Last week, our production crew gathered in the tap room to evaluate six of the different potential hop varieties. Each hop was evaluated for our take on its aroma (i.e. cedar, herbal, spicy, fruity, etc.), overall rating, and any other feedback we had.
With the rubbing of the hops comes an incredible aroma, so walking through the tap room that day was a complete delight to the senses, and it’s a process we’re honored to be a part of each year. Stay tuned, because you never know when one of these hops might just show up in a beer you’re drinking one day!
